3 Health Tech Apps, Scored on Trust: What Patients Actually Feel

We critiqued three patient-facing health tech apps on trust, not just usability. The consent screen mattered more than the dashboard.

Most UX critiques ask whether an interface is easy to use. Health tech has to answer a harder question first: does a patient trust it enough to put real health information into it at all. We picked three patient-facing apps, covering booking, telehealth, and records, and critiqued them through that lens specifically.

The seven-dimension scale still applied, but we weighted trust signals heavily: how clearly the app explains what happens to a patient's data, how plainly consent is asked for rather than buried in a wall of text, and how gracefully the app handles an error in a context where a vague error message can genuinely worry someone.

The differences showed up in small screens that most teams treat as an afterthought. One app's confirmation screen after booking a sensitive appointment type used the same cheerful copy as a routine one, which read as tone-deaf rather than reassuring. Another handled a failed payment mid-booking with a clear, calm explanation and an obvious next step, which mattered more to the overall trust score than any part of its main dashboard.

The honest note here: health tech carries a higher bar than most SaaS, and it should. A clunky onboarding flow in a productivity app costs a user some frustration. A confusing consent screen in a health app costs something closer to trust in the entire product, and that kind of trust is slow to rebuild once it slips.

For anyone building in this space: audit your error states and your consent language before you audit your dashboard. Patients forgive a plain interface far more readily than they forgive feeling unsure about what just happened to their information.
